Getting bangs
Deciding
I’m getting bangs (scroll to the bottom to see the final results).
I asked to get bangs when I was younger and my mom told me no because she knew that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with them. I’m very grateful for her because she was right. But now, at twenty, I think I’m just mature enough to handle bangs.
I really love 60s-style bouffant hair and 90s updos, which is what made me want to get them. The way I see it is that they will grow out in a couple of months and I can always pin them back. But I’m a little unsure if bangs will look good on me. Naturally, cutting out my forehead will bring attention to different parts of my face or might make my face look rounder than I want, which is why I’m hesitant.
I know I’m wording this post as if getting bangs is a life-changing decision, but really, what affects life more than how we look? Well, I suppose the degree one pursues, the career one chooses, the god one follows, or decisions about moving or whether or not to have kids… but this seems important right now.
I’m leaning toward bangs with face-framing layers on the side. Here are some photos I like:
The issue with inspiration photos is that I can’t tell if I’ll like a look on me, or if I only like something because of the girls in the photos.
To help me make my decision, I’ve asked my closest family and friends what they think:
Mom (has bangs): My mom thinks they will look good on me because she says that I can rock any hairstyle. She just doesn’t like bangs that are cut too far from the hairline.
Charlotte (sister): She had bangs and didn’t like them very much because she could never get them to stay back when she pinned them. However, she loves the curtain bangs that they grew into.
Cadence (friend): Cadence is always honest with me. I asked her what she thought about me getting bangs, and she said “NO” immediately. She finds that bangs rarely look good on people. She had bangs throughout her childhood and thinks that that trauma is what fuels her dislike for them. However, she did say that if anyone were to change her mind about bangs, it would probably be me.
Anika (friend x cousin): She loves fashion and can always see a vision. She thinks they would suit me and that they would frame my face very well, especially since I’m going for more wispy bangs.
Katie (friend): Katie is always supportive and excited for me when it comes to my fashion and hair decisions. She enthusiastically said, “Ooo fun! How exciting.”
Final Thoughts
I LOVE THEM. They are exactly what I wanted. I find that they add so much to my hairstyles. I love low and high buns on myself more. I look forward to styling my hair into large, 60s-style curls.
Practically, they aren’t difficult to deal with. It takes me less than five minutes to style them by brushing or blow-drying. I pull them back with clips or a headband if I want them off my face. I love the way they look a couple of hours after styling or sometimes right when I wake up. I’m still experimenting to find my favorite way to wear them but overall I’m happy with my decision.
